Do We Need to Work On Our Spirits?

We honor Dan Duval for bringing attention to this topic and as a source of testimonies.

The soul can need restoration and the mind needs renewal. What of your spirit?

Do we need to work on our spirit?

Do we need to work on our spirit?

Note: We speak of the spirit of man and not Holy Spirit. Man is comprised of spirit, soul, and body as can be seen by Paul mentioning all three in one sentence below:

1 Thess 5:23 KJV “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Your spirit needs to be preserved blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. This implies the possibility of your spirit not being blameless. Otherwise why mention spirit?

Furthermore:

2 Cor 7:1 KJV “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

Your spirit can have filthiness that need be cleansed. This would be one way your spirit is not preserved blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

But isn’t your spirit perfect after being born of God?

1 John 3:9 KJV “Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”

God is spirit, and spirit begets spirit thus “Whosoever is born of God” refers to your spirit. The verse then says that your spirit does not sin and cannot sin.

How is filthiness of spirit possible?

(This section is speculative and has not been ratified. This may or may not be correct.)

Changes positive or negative are possible for the spirit born of God within the bounds of what the spirit was meant to be able to do. Just as an apple tree’s potential is determined from the time it is a seed our potential is determined by our seed, the Word of God. An apple tree cannot grow up like a thorn bush nor can it bear pear fruit. Our bounds are framed by what it is possible for a Son of God.

As the spirit born of God cannot sin we have 2 mechanisms by which the negative comes in:

  1. Negative things are done to the spirit rather than by the spirit.
  2. Some sort of mixing occurs. As if you grafted the pure branch onto another plant, another source. We suspect this happens by entering negative covenants or by unholy spiritual marriages. Mixture.

Those able to add filth to the spirit born of God are therefore other spirits not born of God, your own or other souls, and your own or other bodies.

An act that would cause filthiness: Your soul chooses to participate in worship of a foreign deity by participating in a ritual. Rituals during entry to Greek fraternities and sororities on college campuses are a modern way this can happen. (Remember, food offered to idols is nothing if you do not have the intent to worship, but if you do have the intent to trade and receive benefits then it is an act of worship through sacrifice upon a demonic altar which exists in the spirit world.) This act would defile or add filth upon your spirit as worship is a function of your spirit. You could also have the demonic entering through your gates, possibly those of your spirit if that is possible.

What are some changes of state possible for a spirit?

Here are a few basic things that can happen to a spirit:

Psalm 51:17 YLT “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A heart broken and bruised, O God, Thou dost not despise.”

Psalm 34:18 YLT “Near is Jehovah to the broken of heart, And the bruised of spirit He saveth.”

Prov 17:22 YLT “A rejoicing heart doth good to the body, And a smitten spirit drieth the bone.”

A spirit can be broken, bruised, and smitten. The brokenness is positive and likely as in the breaking of a horse and not as in fragmentation.  A smitten spirit is a negative.

Things that can happen to spirits in general (some items do not apply to a spirit born of God)

  • Other kinds of spirits can be corrupted. The Watchers, which are spirit, were able to leave their first estate. (Jude 1:6)  Lucifer was able to introduce iniquity into himself. (Ezekiel 28:15). The kingdom of darkness has many spirits.
  • Spirits can be captured or put in bondage. (1 Peter 3:19, 2 Peter 2:4, Book of Enoch, Rev 20:2-3)
  • Spirits have emotions which can change. God, who is Spirit, had been described as wrathful at times. (Nahum 1:2) Likewise Holy Spirit can be quenched. (1 Thess 5:19)
  • Spirits have minds and can change them. The Spirit of God has a mind (Romans 8:6). God changed his mind. (Exodus 32:14)
  • You can build relationships with spirits. Moses was friend of God who is Spirit. (Exodus 33:11) Aaron was not. (Num 12)
  • If you accept testimony then some have testified that angelic spirits can be tired or injured (such as having arrows in their back). Testimony also states spirits can be impaled, have tracking devices on them, be chained, handcuffed, blindfolded, gagged, or in counterfeit garments. Credit to Dan Duval.

What work can be needed related to our spirit?

  • Be born from above through salvation first if you haven’t been saved.
  • Sanctification of your spirit as part of sanctification of your whole being. (1 Thess 5:23)
  • Cooperating with God as he breaks your spirit when needed. (Ps 51:17)
  • It need be checked that your soul has chosen to be subject to your spirit.
  • Healing ‘wounds’ of the spirit. A smitten spirit is one example. (Prov 17:22)
  • Repairing your soul’s relationship with your own spirit. Holy Spirit can be grieved (Eph 4:30). Your spirit can be one with Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:17). You can thus grieve your spirit.
  • Renewing the strength of your spirit. Psalm 40:31 “But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; …” You do not have wings. Your spirit can. Thus at least part of this verse is about your spirit. The edification of tongues also likely strengthens your spirit.
  • Delivering your spirit from captivity. This situation is uncommon and a result of demonic activity or of dying before the flood. (1 Peter 3:19)
