Sanctification is First a Person: Yeshua
Sanctification is not merely a set of spiritual disciplines or moral self-improvement; it is a Person. When you enter into relationship with Yeshua, His righteousness and holiness become yours positionally.
“It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness [sanctification], and redemption.”

Through the offering of His body once for all, believers are set apart as holy in the sight of God:
“And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
— Hebrews 10:10
In God’s judicial decree, the moment you trust Christ, you are positionally sanctified. You are declared holy, transferred out of darkness, and rooted in the life of Yeshua.
Sanctification is an Ongoing Place and Process
While positional sanctification is complete at conversion, progressive sanctification is the daily journey of aligning your practical living with your spiritual reality. It is an ongoing “place” of abiding in Christ where the Holy Spirit transforms your mind, desires, and actions.
Hebrews captures this dynamic dual truth in a single verse:
“For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”
— Hebrews 10:14
Notice the two tenses:
- “He has made perfect forever” — Positional reality (past/completed).
- “Those who are being made holy” — Progressive reality (present/ongoing).
As believers abide in Yeshua (John 15:5), the Holy Spirit works internally to conform them into His image:
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

How Do We Know When Sanctification Is Complete?
Sanctification reaches its total fulfillment at Glorification—the moment a believer sees Yeshua face-to-face, whether at physical death or at His return.
Scripture gives us three definitive marks of its completion:
- Complete Conformity to His Likeness:
“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” — 1 John 3:2
- The Finalizing of God’s Work:
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 1:6
- Total Preservation of Body, Soul, and Spirit:
“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:23
Living in the Tension
You are already sanctified because you are in Yeshua, who is your holiness. Yet, you are actively being sanctified as you surrender your daily life to His Spirit. Recognizing this dual truth frees you from condemnation while fueling your pursuit of practical holiness.
Exodus 31:13
“Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.'”
Leviticus 20:7–8
“Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the Lord your God. And you shall keep My statutes, and perform them: I am the Lord who sanctifies you.”
John 17:17
“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”
John 17:19
“And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.”
Acts 26:18
“…to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.”
